OUR MISSION

First Friday Greencastle was started in 2009 as a partnership between the Greencastle-Antrim Chamber of Commerce and the Greencastle Area Arts Council. As a way to bring life and increase foot traffic into the downtown area, Greencastle embraced the national phenomenon of the First Friday movement. The goals of First Friday Greencastle are to revitalize the downtown, bring cultural awareness to the community and support new business. First Friday is a multidisciplinary arts and cultural event that takes place on the first Friday of May through October, rain or shine from 5 to 8 pm. Each event features artists, shops, restaurants, and live music. This free event is currently located on the square and radiates outward along Baltimore and Carlisle Streets. On average, the event showcases over 20 diverse small businesses and restaurants and over 20 local artists. It has gained momentum with each successive year.

First Friday is about making the arts and culture accessible and inviting; it's not just about economic development. First Friday is managed by an independent committee that is composed of downtown merchants and local citizens. The main goal of this committee is carry out the mission of First Friday while still maintaining the integrity of the event with established guidelines for Artists and Vendors who exhibit at this event. The operating budget for the monthly events is fueled by donations and sponsorships from local businesses and individuals. A yearly budget is typically around $5,000. First Friday Greencastle has had a positive impact on the community, making citizens aware of local offerings and drawing people downtown on a more frequent basis.

On Fridays May through October you will probably find a great local band performing their favorite selections on the Town Square. Performing Artists add so much to this street festival atmosphere. In addition, sometimes the local restaurants will also have soloists or bands performing in their place of business to showcase even more of the local talent in our community.
